“Don’t Tell My Mother!” at Busby’s East

Whether you were a jock or a nerd, a cheerleader or a goth, an academic achiever or a parking lot pot smoker, chances are your adolescence involved one or two (or a couple hundred) juicy stories you’d be aghast to tell your mother. From stealing dad’s magazine stash, to buying booze with a fake ID, to flirting with your guidance counselor, we’ve all had those moments of youthful idiocy we’ll happily laugh at – from the relative comfort of adulthood.

That’s the premise behind Don’t Tell My Mother!, a Fairfax District favorite that unveils in its new location, Busby’s East, this Thursday. Created by Hollywood exec Nikki Levy, DTMM is a raucous evening of laughs and tears, as comedians, actors, and other entertainers dig up their best moments with mom. Deeply devoted to the older-than-time art form of storytelling, DTMM eschew’s the usual tropes of stand-up and encourages its guests to find a moment from their childhood to translate into a complete narrative. Running the gamut from funny to heartbreaking and everywhere in between, DTMM’s stories are always engaging, never dull.

This Thursday’s event kicks off Don’t Tell My Mother’s new residency at Busby’s East, just past the El Rey Theatre on the Miracle Mile. TV Mom Joanna Kerns (matriarch of the Seaver family on Growing Pains) is the guest of honor, and the night will be rounded out by a food and drink pre-reception, plus live music by Abby & the Myth. Busby’s East is located at 5364 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036, and tickets are available here.
