Har Mar Superstar and The Pizza Underground at El Rey
Have you ever thought, “I really love pizza, and I really love The Velvet Underground, I wish they were somehow combined”? Bonus points if you are also a fan of former child stars, because tomorrow, Saturday November 15, Macauley Culkin will preform with his pizza-themed Velvet Underground parody band at the El Rey Theater alongside Har Mar Superstar. The Brooklyn-based band believes Velvet Underground songs were supposed to be written about pizza, but changed their lyrics to accomodate the “standards of their day.” Last year they released a viral promotional video of Macaulay Culkin eating a slice of pizza as a parody of Andy Warhol eating a Whopper in 66 Scenes From Americana.
Subsequently they released their first music video via noisey for All The Pizza Parties.
Rumor has it that they give out free pizza to attendees at all their shows, so you know where I’ll be Saturday night. Not that the fun stops there; Pizza Underground is co-headlining this current tour with dancey soul crooner Har Mar Superstar, whose 2013 album Bye Bye 17 still regularly spins on my record player. Har Mar’s shows are always wild and provacative, and I’ll be damned if you’re not dancing by the end of the night. That is unless you’re stuffed with pizza to move.
