Wasteland is a Melrose mecca of unique vintage, secondhand designer, and new, on-trend items for style mavens, rockers, and those who don’t follow society’s rules of dressing. No trip to the famous shopping street is complete without going into Wasteland to peruse 1990’s Dolce and Gabbana crop tops, gently worn Louboutins, cheesy pre-owned t-shirts, and new items from trendy brands like Unif and MinkPink. So I brought my friend Dani, someone who takes more outfit inspiration from David Bowie than she does from Anna Wintour, to go shopping with me.
I always hit the wall of shoes first when I go to Wasteland. I guess it’s just instinct. A buffet of last season’s designer footwear for a tiny fraction of the original price, how could I resist? We found the perfect pink Louboutins, but deemed the stiletto heel un-walkable.
They had a perfect selection of New Years Eve outfits- sequin dresses, fur coats, shiny Jeffrey Campbell platforms, and cat-eye MinkPink shades, but Dani found her ideal NYE dress hidden in an unsuspecting rack. It was a magnificently tacky, teal Herve Leger dress complete with cut-outs and rhinestones, so she had to try it on.
Unfortunately this Andy Warhol dress from 1965 wasn’t for sale, so Dani settled for the teal Herve Leger to help ring in 2015 while I fell in love with a 1950’s style Rebecca Taylor dress.
